You can trace the roots of modern furniture design in the U.S. to one person: Gilbert Rhode. As our first Design Director in 1931, he convinced our founder D.J. De Pree to switch from producing ornate reproductions to making "modern" furniture. "You're not making furniture anymore," he later told De Pree, "you're providing a way of life."
